"This Is Us" - Music from Appenzell, compiled by Jeremy Deller
Neue Kunst Halle St. Gallen, on 21 September 2004 at 7pm
Davidstrasse 40, 9000 St. Gallen

British artist Jeremy Deller (*1966) has created a portrait of Appenzell village based on musical research, which shows a cross section of a pluralistic society. For his work "This Is Us" he has recorded musical groups in Appenzell ranging from performances of local traditional music to the church choir, from punk to grunge. The results of his research are published on a CD, which is available as an exhibition catalogue. He uses music as a basis for his work as a visual artist.
In March 2003 an early version of "This Is Us" was produced in Redhook village (USA). A new link between Appenzell and Redhook now exists. In both villages one finds similar forms of musical expression: from death metal bands to school choirs.
